CHRISTINA BESKOU, ATHEN - Greece

HAMBURGER SOMMERTANZTAGE 2010

unterrichtet bei uns Floor Barre/Placement, Ballett & Pointe Work

Christina Beskou had the great fortune to start at the age of 12 studying with the Greek-Egyptian dance legend, Nelly Mazloum Calvo in Athens where she got a solid base for her future career as a dancer, teacher and choreographer. At the age of 17 she set out for London to study at the Royal Academy of Dance and obtained the Diploma of the Advanced level, A.R.A.D. She studied the Martha Graham Technique with Karen Bell Kanner at the Place (London Contemporary Dance School) where she met Maria Fay with whom she took Master Ballet classes and acquired her unique Floor Barre Technique. She is the only person in the profession who has been granted permission to teach and experiment with this specific unique technique. She started her teaching career 1987 as Maria’s assistant at the London Contemporary Dance Company and the Central School of Ballet in London.

She also attended numerous workshops with exceptional teachers all over the world, has been a guest teacher in schools and companies worldwide and has given many workshops internationally.

Choreographer

scan31Back in Greece she danced with various companies, started choreographing and founded her own non profit artistic organization, ‘Seresta Dance Company’.

In 1993 she established the Seresta Dance Studio to artistically support her company and to share her experience with everybody who loves dance.

Since 1998 she has been involved in the study of the history and technique of the Argentinean Tango. The results of this were three productions: “Bar Sur”, “Café Concert” and “Lifestyle”. She is currently working on a new piece together with some argentinean guest dancers.

Christina’s main purpose is not only technique, which is absolutely necessary for the execution of her choreographies, but to develop her dancer’s personalities and their potentials as human beings.

She gives the opportunity to her dancers to become creative as professional choreographers and to experiment on expressiveness and movements. Some of their choreographies have been included in Seresta’s productions.

Floor Barre by Maria Fay

FloorBarreChrist30The unique system created by Maria Fay in order to help dancers to recover from major injuries.

A system based on the classical ballet barre technique with influences from pilates and yoga, essential to all dancers who want to improve placement, control, flexibility and maintain purity, coordination and the correct breathing while executing the  most demanding physical exercises.

Christina Beskou is the only one in the profession to whom Maria Fay gave permission to teach the system and experiment with it.

FloorBarreChristB3Considering the necessity of non-dancers who want to train and keep in shape, Christina developed through her years of experience a simpler approach to teaching non-dancers.

As a result of this, people are able to reach their full potential, achieve the correct posture and train their muscles to become stronger, through various exercises that help to obtain the correct breathing technique, in order to reach the maximum of their potential.

By the way: The Maria Fay technique is different to the one of Zena Rommett, New York

Christina are demonstrating some of the Floor Barre exercises in these two videos:  Basic Floor Barre    Advanced Foor Barre
